"But if we take this basic service (telephony) is packaged well there is a lot of money to be made."

elmatador- Well we totally agree on this. That is exactly why SBC is spending $6 billion(Project Pronto) on upgrading the twisted pair capabilities. I could be mistaken, but I thought you painted the copper pair as disintegrating to dust. That I could not agree with. Well at least not for a decade, most likely two.

"Keep this basic service standing alone it will die."

I really don't have a strong opinion on this, but intuitively I feel that if a Class Five is paid for, the CO land and building is paid for, the copper is paid for, THEN I would have to think ILECs could make money on local consumer telephony even at substantially reduced prices.

In the 12 years I've been living in my home, I have never called the ILEC to complain about local phone service. I have never received an improper bill. It's hard for me to think that this doesn't translate into a smooth running operation that makes money for the ILECs. I know it's only circumstantial evidence, but it's pretty compelling nonetheless. Rarely does a technology work so problem free. Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)
