I think economics determines hardware purchases.

I find it hard to believe that a company can argue
about spending money on 100,000 NT workstations and
servers as a more economical choice than Sun servers
delivering web based content to web browsers. The
money saved from NT licenses by using Linux clients
could more than pay for one Sun server. It sounds
that your company is locked into software
that demands Microsoft clients and servers, and the
transition cost to Sun is high, not that it is not
economical under certain circumstances.
