On another note, can a company that sells a complete product directly to end users ... be gorilla? From what I have read, this is not possible.

Microsoft did a great job of it.

But Microsoft did not sell Windows as a completed product. It has to run on PCs. It is an operating system that needs to have applications. Hence the PC makers and the application developers become the value chain.
