I'm one of those grey kind of people. Standardization is good, up to a point. Diversity is good, up to a point. A world wide language standard is not likely soon, and so it is to America's advantage to have many bilingual residents who can cope with the other languages of the world. This works well where I work. I can get an e-mail message translated in an hour or less and most business is carried on in English. A lot of grief could be avoided if energies were directed away from English-only or English-never activities into incentives for alternate language education at the youngest levels, head-start and day care subsidies.
