12/22/00 Silicon Labs settles suit against Analog, 3Com
Austin-based Silicon Laboratories Inc. [Nasdaq: SLAB] has settled an intellectual property lawsuit against Analog Devices Inc. and 3Com Corp.
Terms of the settlement weren't disclosed.
The suit was filed Jan. 12 in U.S. District Court in Austin. At the time the suit was filed, both companies were customers of Silicon Labs. 3Com accounted for more than 80 percent of Silicon Labs' sales in 1999.
Silicon Labs designs and manufactures mixed-signal integrated circuits for the telecommunications industry.
Norwood, Mass.-based Analog Devices [NYSE: ADI] makes integrated circuits used in analog and digital signal processing.
Santa Clara, Calif.-based 3Com [Nasdaq: COMS] manufactures wireless products and provides infrastructure for network service providers.

Bring it on, it is too late. The cat is out of the bag. When a stock rises in face of bad news and downgrades, these factors are likely accounted for, If Naz in general and tech in particular are indeed turning the corner, the quality stks like ADI will eventually lead the pack. Currently, the stks with more bang are probably heavily shorted. So, the true strength may not be apparent.

best, Bosco

Jim...

In the Merill report you cited, I have copied out the "snippert" shown below.

>>In the analog space, Osha noted that Analog Devices and Linear Technology have not seen weakness in their core businesses yet, but through checks he has found that problems are already evident in "weaker" analog companies including National Semiconductor Corp. (NSM), Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. (FCS) and Intersil Holding Corp. (ISIL).<<

Could it be that NSM and FCS and ISIL are having problems because ADI is beating them? Or could it be that these companies are in sectors that are hurting? ADI as I recollect has presence in so many sectors that any one or two with slowdowns will not hurt them as much.

Any info or opinions would be helpful.

Thanks

Bob T.

"but through checks he has found that problems are already evident in "weaker" analog companies including National Semiconductor Corp. (NSM), Fairchild Semiconductor International Inc. (FCS) and Intersil Holding Corp. (ISIL)."

Checks with my sources (Yahoo, PRnewswire, CNBC) have also shown some problems in Fairchild's business. In fact, one insider (www.fairchild.com) revealed that this quarter will be on the light side, with further weakness extending into the next period as well.
