>> SMS Send Arrives Commercially on CDMA networks

Telstra in Australia has launched SMS mobile originate (send) its CDMA Freedom network in Australia. Until now, SMS MO has only been available on GSM and TDMA type networks, but CDMA now completes the set of major mobile radio standards that support two-way SMS.

To be able to send SMS messages, customers need a phone that supports this functionality. The range in Australia is currently the Hyundai 120E or 300E models or the LG 800W.

As well as person to person messaging, information services are already available via CDMA SMS. The next step will be for SMS message exchange between CDMA networks and between CDMA and other network types.

Mobile Lifestreams is predicting that the global SMS market will more than double during 2002 to 40 billion SMS messages sent and received in the month of December 2001, fuelled by widening support of SMS on TDMA and CDMA networks.

Congratulations to Telstra Australia on taking this momentous step. <<
