Stitch,
A cutback in orders at HDD makes sense in light of their pending merger with Maxtor. They will undoubtedly be very conservative in their use of MKE's facilities, cutting back there first, and keeping Maxtor's assembly operations busy as much as possible. Also, I find it hard to believe that the combined entity will keep a 35% share on the desktop. Twenty five to thirty is more plausible. However, I think that they will be more profitable. A prediction: at some point in the next two to three years, the leading DD companies will sell for PSRs of between .8 and 1 again, perhaps even slightly above one. The folks behind Seagate will see to that when they suddenly appreciate the benefits that public ownership of DD companies have over private ownership. IMHO.
