As the reactions of some on the thread last night demonstrated, many, perhaps most, people wouldn't get the reference to using Crisco when the oil of choice was not available. Ashcroft probably has no idea, or had no idea, how Crisco is used by gays. When I was in college, a gay friend (male) used to take me dancing at a gay bar in the French Quarter. In a corner there were leather goods with lots of metal studding for sale - I was wondering what a wide, squatty cylindrical leather contraption was for, and was told it was a leather cover for Crisco cans. Had to have it explained to me why people would want a leather covered Crisco can. Not the type of thing you read about in Ladies Home Journal.
