Its is arguable if immunity to taxes amounts to a subsidy. The money generated by private orginizations or individuals really doesn't belong to the government and IMO the government has no real right to it other then necessity (no taxes=no government=anarchy). I will grant that the practical effect of a tax break or a direct subsidy can be similar or identical.

Another question is if many churches would really report a profit if they were subject to taxes. (esp. considering they would alter their finacial actions to avoid taxes).
