Our furnace/water heater closet is on an outside wall (breezeway) with well ventilated doors. It's a new house and propane is the only option outside of town where we live. Lots of folks use it. Not that that makes it safe. I think we may be one of the few around here who designed the furnace/water heater to be outside. Although most people put them in their garages which also are well ventilated near the ground because gas fumes are heavier than air too.

As for the pb stove, chainsaw and splitter, I think I'm leaning toward pellets. Renewable energy and all. Plus, it's a pretty cool (cool might not be the best choice of word) use of an otherwise thrown away byproduct. Got no trees on my property anyway and the new pellets stove are clean burning and pretty dang efficient as well as low maintenance, thermostat controlled. You can load up one time or less per day. Plus pellets would be cheaper than cord wood.
