i2, Anyone?

IF ONE OF THE MOST lasting benefits of the Internet is its efficiency as a communications platform for businesses, then i2 Technologies (Nasdaq: ITWO) is in a sweet spot.

The company designs supply chain software, meaning it helps companies tie inventory systems in with those of their suppliers and customers. The result? Less inventory -- an expensive asset that often depreciates quickly. Supply chain software helps companies react smartly to demand forecasts, through inventory and production planning.

All of today' s big corporate software sectors are focused on this optimal alignment of customer demand with corporate supply. For example, supply chain software takes customer information, accurately predicts future demand, and optimizes inventory, production and shipping schedules to meet this demand quickly. It' s really more than software that does the trick. Time-tested algorithms for prediction and optimization have to be embedded in the code, and in the market for this kind of supply chain intelligence, i2 Technologies is the unquestioned leader. i2 has been designing this type of software for more than 10 years.

In i2' s business, pricing power is driven by the savings delivered to customers. In the corporate software world, this makes supply chain planning a true rarity -- a software expense that can be easily measured against the savings it generates.

i2' s current stock price already reflects great expectations, but for those seeking investments in the emerging business-to-business (B2B) software niche, it warrants a closer look.

Randy: Thank you for the short but accurate assessment. Unfortunately, there are many people out there who own ARBA thinking they have a leading company in the SCM business -- a sign that they have little idea whatsoever of what the comparative prospects are. ARBA is not in SCM. Itwo is and looks like it will dominate that space in years to come. I don't care if people own ARBA, but I find it too bad that people come to a thread like this and fail to benefit. Thank you for the post.
