Certainly it is reasonable to expect that the neural "configuration" of a religious belief is different from the neural "configuration" of a political belief

I'm not so sure the process is that different. When people believe dogma of any kind with an absolutist conviction, their behavioral outputs are pretty much the same. Politics, because it is rooted in the secular, measurable world can at least be tested. If I claim my God is more powerful than your God, there is no test of it.

[Edit: I will further add, that even though a mechanism for testing exists for politics, there seems to no compulsion by believers to persue it!]
