Hi, Dennis- I'm a retired Professor of Marketing ...

So your thoughts were most interesting. I used to teach a lot about communication. We would stress that "senders" and "receivers" need to be linked by a "common frame of reference." As a sender (of new information), you begin by studying your receivers. What do they know about the subject now? How can you motivate them to want to learn more? How can you link your information to things that are already familiar to them? How can you make sure that the effect of their new learning experience will be a pleasing one? And so on and so forth.

Such ideas are far from new, but they are the keys to effective communication. I taught in an engineering-oriented university and had many tech-type students. They typically have brilliant minds, but they tend to be impatient with "soft" subjects such as Marketing. If you can't make a blueprint of it, what good is it?

Well, none of this is new, either. I guess this gap will always exist, between product-centered people and customer-centered people.

And I guess, too, that there are more important things to worry about in this world!

J.C.
