That has been "grandfathered" in. It would never be allowed now, thank goodness. I always hated the lyrics meaning, but I recognize it's historical relevance.

I realllllly want to talk about this! ANd I can't now because I have to go dress- at the moment I have on a pair of my son's plaid flannel pajama pants and a purple Alcatraz sweatshirt with bolognese sauce decorating it. It's attractive, but not quite right for a dinner party.
How old is your daughter and where are they singing it- in what context? DOn't leave this topic without me, or at least don't lose interest til tomorrow.

I have been having trouble with my daughter singing Battle Hymn of the Republic at her public school. What do you think.

Hi, YYB. I think it depends on the context. I'm uncomfortable with the words of that song, too, although I recall enjoying singing it as a kid in school. I still remember most of the words.

I can rationalize it as a folk song or old patriotic song if it's being sung in that context. I remember enjoying Shenandoah, too. I don't think I'd go to the mat over this song as long as it isn't being sung in a patently religious context.

We do not sing that at our public school- we discussed it- and it is too likely to offend someone in our multireligious school- wow, and singing it for no reason! You aren't even linking it to a civil war disucssion? We have a music teacher at our school who teaches folk music- there is TONS of folk music that will not challenge anyone's religious beliefs- we use THAT music.
