Well, I did until they started always taking that stupid high note in the next-to-last line. I really hate that.

I'm with you on that high note. I like singers to stick to the script. I admire scat but I don't enjoy it at all, if that makes any sense. I've never liked the Star Spangled Banner much. I'd prefer America the Beautiful as the National Anthem. But a marching band playing John Phillip Souza brings me to tears.

I'm a bit uncomfortable talking music with someone who can earn money from her singing. My vocal range is something less than an octave, although I can carry a tune, mostly.

Speaking of national anthems, did you hear that Russia is adopting the old Soviet national anthem? Now *that* one brings tears to my eyes. I really missed it at the latest Olympics.

Hi Everyone,

I'm so behind on this thread, now reading great discussions that I'm have already ended and too tired to post anything but incomprehensible babble. (Which is accepted elsewhere but not here <g>)

Rambi, I too have had years of traditional, then bel canto, vocal training. Lots of church singing for this Poet too. And someday I may be able to tell you about it. :)

In the meantime, enjoy, all.

I still remember brief snips of the way we used to sing "The Battle Hymn..." when I was a kid.

Mine eyes have seen the glory of a great big long vacation
It shall help to make the boys and girls the leaders of our nation
We'll perform an operation on the Board of Education...

I forgot the last line, and I'm sure it deserved forgetting.

If we'd never sung the song, just think how deprived we'd have been. What would we have parodied then?

I don't worry too much about the religious connotations; they are couched in such archaic language that few if any students would actually notice them. Of course my kids don't sing the song, not being in an American school.

Credibility. Yet another reason to choose my battles. I appreciate everyone's input.
