And how could we respect him if he neglected his duty to god?

While a senator is selected by his constituents to promote their interests, as you said, Attorneys General do not make laws, they enforce them.
Ashcroft is not the man for the job.

Message #1410 from Steven Rogers at Jan 17, 2001 11:53 PM

I suppose that his higher authority will also require him to bring that truth to the rest of us, whether we like it or not. Just the fellow we need in charge of the coercive mechanisms of the State....

Which is of course completly different from those who believe they have to bring thier belief about truth to us about environmental issues, or socalism or gun control, or zoning issues, or minimum wages, or allowable prices, or anything else using the coercive mechanisms of the state.

Are you saying

1 - People with strong religious beliefs should not be allowed to be Attourney General?

or

2 - Religious people is ok but Ashcroft would not enforce the law. If so what specifically about Ashcroft makes you think he would not enforce the law if strongly religious people in general would be ok?

or

3 - Ashcroft would try to use the office to push opionions on political issues that are influence by his religious beliefs, but would actually try to push theological ideas on people. If you believe this all I ask is why? What makes you believe such an unlikely thing?
