I don't doubt that there are compassionate conservatives; I'm sure there are lots of them. I just don't think Ashcroft is one of them. Compassion, of course, is not a prerequisite for an Attorney General, but the ability to place the law of the land above personal beliefs is.

It is not an ideal place for an ideologue.

And of course a conservative would never be attacked for commiting obstruction of justice or perjury.
