There can be no consensus or finding a middle ground without one side or the other feeling they are selling out.

I agree with you that people whose views are a recitation of dogma are incapable of consensus. That's why I find them so frustrating. But not all people on the right are religious let alone dogmatic. And there are lots of religious people on the left. If the non-dogmatics could reach a consensus, then the dogmatic minority would be marginalized and toothless. Seems to me it's worth a try. If we're choosing up sides, I'd rather draw the bright line between the dogmatics and everyone else.
