Scumbria, the main conflict I see is that environmental regulations lower the standard of living for the people involved.

There is a true economic tradeoff. You don't soil your own bed, fine, but you make less money in the process. Your grandkids might pay an economic price, but for the most part, people aren't willing to pay the short term price for an uncertain long term gain.

Environmental regulations is one of the few places where the concept of moral hazard makes sense.
