Jim, Re: The problem is they can't redesign the core for significant power reduction. So they went back to the drawing board.

Get real, Jim. They worked on the improved core for 18 months now. Do you really think they realized after 18 months works that they couldn't reach their goals? The core is already finished, samples were shipping in December and production is about to begin. There won't be any major changes now. It just takes some time to redesign a core and only an one quarter slip is very good IMO. The original K7 was supposed to come out in Q1 1999, then in 1st half 1999 and it really appeared in August. Probably the same concerns from you would have applied then. But as we all know they would have been completely unfounded. Chip design is a very complex process and it's very difficult to estimate shipping dates in advance.

Jim,

Now WAIT A MINUTE! I thought the Palomino core (ex Mustang core) was going to address the power consumption problem irregardless of
PowerNow. So no they are telling us that the Palomoano will still suck power like the T-bird and because of that it will just be capable of a slight
bump in MHZ?????

Not exactly what I said, but I am concerned that they are having a hell of a time reducing power outside of PowerNow! -- which does little for desktop frequency scaling. But this is just my guess (but the delays seems to indicate the same).

Pravin.

The way I understood it, they were talking about performance and performance only (per clock performance, IPC). There was no mention of die sizes or nominal power consumption.

Also, intrinsic lower power consumption isn't something you can easily market to the public. PowerNow! is. It's smart, it's intuitive.
