RE:"Get real, Jim. They worked on the improved core for 18 months now. Do you really think they realized after 18 months works that they couldn't reach their goals? The core is already finished, samples were shipping in December and production is about to begin. There won't be any major changes now. It just takes some time to redesign a core and only an one quarter slip is very good IMO. The original K7 was supposed to come out in Q1 1999, then in 1st half 1999 and it really appeared in August. Probably the same concerns from you would have applied then. But as we all know they would have been completely unfounded. Chip design is a very complex process and it's very difficult to estimate shipping dates in advance"

OK...but we don't now how many times and when they went back to the drawing board but we do know that the palomino core is 3 months late. I didn't say they went back to the drawing board in Dec.
It's also starting to look like it's very hard to get the power consumption down on the Athlon core as Pravin suggests...
And that the Palomino core MHZ increase will be less than we'd hoped because of the inability to get the power consumption down.
Looking more like the core is starting to see the end of the MHz road.

adreas, I agree with Jim that there was a 2-3 month delay in Pally. Probably to implement SSE, maybe to fix bugs. That's how much time a mask revision takes. As I just posted, I'm hoping that the first Pally will be a 1 GHz notebook chip.
