Lu Xun,

The car kit installation is complete, but I am working through some problems. The problems may be due to the car kit, or due to the new data-enabled phone I got not long ago (and on which I had made only one call before using it with the car kit), or some interaction between them.

I've been putting off writing up the results, because the results to date are not very useful. But, FWIW and until I get through this, here's what has happened:

- Phone cradle and handset were installed in the passenger leg well; that location might cramp some passengers, but to me it is a non-issue. What is an issue for me is that they are installed a bit too far back, thus making it difficult to take the phone in and out of the cradle; that's probably my fault for not leaving the phone, or at least it's dimensions with the installer; in any case, it can be easily fixed.

- Now for more bizarre stuff. My first ride with the phone in the car kit went smoothly; successfully received a test call; phone powered up and down correctly and maintained signal. Second ride was not good; phone kept going offline. Finally when I tried the phone by itself outside the car, I found it was constantly dropping the signal and searching for service. Customer Support ran me through a long exercise to reboot the phone's software. That appeared to fix the problem until after the next ride. Now the phone, outside the car, goes offline. I will have to phone Customer Support again on this.

- A new problem has cropped up since the software reboot: when I turn off the ignition, and the phone powers down, the phone immediately displays a message that it is charging. The phone's battery has a good charge already, so I don't know what this is about. Another item for Customer Support.

It would be really nice to have access to a Globalstar trained installer who could work with the problems hands-on. But phone support is still support.

More later when all is, hopefully, well.

My G* car kit has been exonerated; problems were due to bad phone.
