Doubt it Washington said Calif. needs to handle it's own business. OT got a new cell package Tonight from Voicestream VSTR, 500 anytime and 2000 weekend minutes for 39.99 a month with a Motorola phone with web access for a penny. In a few months full web access with DSL speed. Now I know why DT bought them, store just opened and was doing brisk business. Phone is light and has a cover for the keypad. Edit forgot to mention got a 20.00 coupon for accessories so We got a car charger for 9.00 and a free direct tv dish with activation of the phone.

It is my fervent hope that if there is a Federal bailout to supply power to California, the rest of the U.S. does not get stuck with the bill for their stupidity.

Diesel:

Federal bailout is us! There's no magic pot of money.

dieselfuel....re: your comments on Calif. energy problem...

The most amazing thing I've seen so far in reading about this mess is that some of the old-economy stocks (paper and other manufacturing companies) have literally stopped producing their products in favor of selling the energy contracts they currently have to the folks in California.

They have found they can make more money selling energy than selling their products!!

Investor tip: Look around for companies that have long-term energy contracts in place and then buy their stocks.....might be a nice profit bounce for them over the next quarter or so. (just kidding, but maybe not wrong about the situation)

OT... <What the hell happened to the nuclear plants that were supposed to generate all that power, more than we needed, and cost so little? What a scam. The consumer gets screwed, again.>

What happened is the misguided, holier-than-thou activists operating under the guise of "protectors of the environment" caused costs and schedules to escalate beyond the economic investment point. And, yes, the consumer did get screwed, with no one to blame but ourselves for letting a relatively few zealots effectively control our futures.

Nuclear plants already under design or construction in the 70's and 80's were either scrapped, with sunk costs going into the rate base, or completed at costs many times their "true" cost due to the time value of money and numerous unnecessary, politically motivated design changes.

Perhaps the real tragedy, though, has yet to be felt... and not only because we now need the power that could have been cheap. By abdicating its early position of global leadership and effectively dismantling the commercial nuclear industry, the US lost its ability to influence the rest of the world in the SAFE development and application of nuclear power. Now it's every nation for itself... an oversimplification, perhaps, but scary nonetheless.
