I've seen the most weird devices running Linux. Even Windows CE machines... :-) It's also no secret any more, that PlayStations can be made to run home-made CD-recordables. I don't know exactly how it is done, but it can be done.

I still expect Microsoft to go into the Linux business in a couple of years, and maybe the term "Microsoft Linux" is just as unlikely for you as "Microsoft Internet something..." was some years ago, but MSFT actually does sell some Internet capable stuff today, and actually also already provided functionality to Linux open-source source-code: Perl. Microsoft .net is also not credible, if it doesn't run Linux well.

Bookmark this post, so that you can refer to it in a couple of years :-)

There is no doubt, that the X-box if fully capable of running Linux, the only question is, will it do it. If MSFT has to approve all titles, there could be several reasons for them to approve some Linux stuff:

1) Some important game is to be written for Linux that MSFT wants on their box, too.
2) Some important non-game Linux software is wanted on the X-box.
3) They will relax their demands to the publishers in order to attract more titles.
4) If they should dominate the market with the machines, the DOJ may require that they allow Linux titles... ;-)
5) Something we haven't thought of, yet.

In this country, nothing can prevent MSFT from having me run Linux on this thing from the start. I believe some enthusiast out there will try to make the right drivers for the X-box right from the launch. MSFT cannot prevent these drivers from being available for download. Maybe in the U.S., but not in Europe. With the right drivers, Linux games will be able to run almost with no modifications on the X-box. Suddenly, Linux could be the biggest game platform ever... ;-)

- Linus never thought that Linux would become anything usable.
- Some years after, he never thought that Linux would be used widely.
- Some years after that, he never thought that Linux would be used in business.
- Some years after that, he never thought that Linux would have a significant market share.
- Then he gave up and declared: Linux will dominate the world.

I had the same steps in my mind. Then suddenly I reached the last line, a big bright light came into my mind, and today I totally agree. Linux will dominate the world. MSFTs biggest challenge is to put .net on the top without loosing grace.

Lars.

Dave and thread - I now have W2000. Its the best. I had W98 and it started to go wrong. I have a Toshiba 7020CT with docking station.

I eventually lost all my data on my C drive and so I decided to try and install W2000 the first time it stopped and refused to go on at one of the last operations. I lost patience, formatted the C drive reinstalled W98 and then upgraded to W2000 and it worked like a dream and it has ever since.

It starts up quicker and it even closes down without having to be re-booted in the process.

W2000 is great. I don't use it as a large or medium scale business user, just as a stand alone unit.

When people find out from others how good it is compared to 98 I think MSFT will get a lot more conversions ot W2000.

If this is the expeirience of others then MSFT must be a good bet from here on in in my view.

Best regards,

L
