Jamok: as I said I wasn't aware that the TNT1 was less than promised

Actually, I was relieved you weren't aware. This means there is good chance that people will have forgotten about AMD's past, major goofs in the reasonably near future ;)

finally dumped it when it became clear that Greg Ballard, the CEO, was purposively lying about shipping dates and promised performance, and continued talking about 3dfx's "technological lead" long after they clearly lost it.

I found it shocking that the investing community couldn't see that 3dfx was in serious trouble when the TNT came out. Imagine if AMD had to use two separate chips to make "a CPU", whereas the competition could do it with one! Or, playing on the more recent troubles of 3dfx, imagine if AMD had to use twice the memory (with all the information being contained twice!) of Intel in order to reach roughly the same performance!

That said, NVIDIA can stumble as well. They haven't really shown much innovation since the GeForce - that is, they haven't really addressed the primary problem: memory bandwidth.

Re:3DFX "I used to own (to my disappointment) a fair chunk of 3dfx back in 1998 or 99, and finally dumped it"

I jumped into TDFX (5000 sh. at 5/32) the day Nvidia's purchase of 3DFX's assets came out. I'm hoping to get 125 sh. of NVDA and maybe some cash in liquidation. NVDA's stock price has been steadily going up (from mid 30's to mid 50's). I'm only risking $800. Might be a nice little payoff of $5k or $6K.

BTW, my 800 Classic Athlon system uses an ATI board. Works well as it is mostly a game system.
