John,
RE:"Well, you could say that the people of California elected politicians who, under the guise of deregulation, allowed the cost of energy to their utilities to rise, but fixed the price the utilities could charge. Selfish and stupid, and a sure path to bankruptcy. Then the people of California said "not in my backyard" to increasing power capacity, guaranteeing that they would have to depend on outside sources. None of those messy power plants for us Californians, we'll let people from other states have that stuff in their backyards.

It's the ultimate expression of the me generation in the me first state. Take but don't invest. And California is getting everything they deserve. It's unfortunate that future generations will have to pay for the selfishness of current California residents."

To quote another poster...Why the blatant jealosy of California? Did the love of your life marry someone from California? LOL jajajaja

Of course 99% of Californians will claim they never voted in the politicians that made those laws...
Back then I think the secret hope was that they could create some kind of Ecotopia by limiting potentially bad environmental things like Nuclear Power (I remember Diablo Canyon, some of my colleages did the environmental studies) and even limit growth. Apparently their kids didn't see it all that way...

Sad thing is I own Edison Intl. stock...

Jim

JF, I agree with everything you said, but I'm still stuck on one nitpick:

<Well, you could say that the people of California elected politicians who, under the guise of deregulation, allowed the cost of energy to their utilities to rise, but fixed the price the utilities could charge. Selfish and stupid, and a sure path to bankruptcy.>

Stupid I can see, but selfish? Seems like more of a misjudgement to me, since California thought there would be a ready supply of low-cost energy from out-of-state.

I guess that would be the selfish part, wanting to receive power without having to generate it themselves, but you already covered that aspect.

<It's the ultimate expression of the me generation in the me first state.>

And yet the residents continue to blame it on Bigtime Corporations. Anyone but themselves. If that isn't the severest form of denial, I don't know what is.

We are already paying for the previous generations neglect of our atmosphere which I am sure caused you to move out of here. We are just trying to clean it up for future gens. even if we have to suffer some shortages ( we could actually reduce our use of these resources) of resources.

OT RE: "It's the ultimate expression of the me generation in the me first state."

Wow, John. Remember when you asked a poster not to generalize the folks of Florida during the Election? May I gently suggest the same principle with respect to generalizations of Californians

RE: "Take but don't invest. "

My impression is that Silicon Valley (which is a part of California) is an area that gives a lot to this country through intense hard-work.

I have the impression that this provides retirees with a way to retire in comfort by way of providing a plethora of public companies that the public (and retirees) may invest in, and this in turn enables retirees to enjoy themselves in their retirement (as they should) and play golf. I don't consider that taking, I consider it giving.

Thought I would provide a different perspective to the same State.

Regards,
Amy J

Wow, always knew there was a bit of a rivalry between Florida & California but I never knew you all were so jealous. We gave you OJ, what else do you want?
