On my machine I have an epson attached to the parallel port. I don't see the same issue. I did find that if I use a USB to parallel port adapter on it it has loads of problems. I'll blame that on the Epson Parallel port driver thank you.

Our other older machine that has the officejet on it using the parallel port, no problem.

The laptop also runs Win2k and aside from a noisy harddisk it seems fine.

My internal net is wireless (Cisco) and runs beautifully sharing the DSL connection between the 3 PCs, using ICS on Win2k.

Tell me. How well does the USB web cam, OfficeJet, GeForce and Kodak Digital camera work with Linux?

As far as the original post goes, I understood it as he lost a Win98 installation and tried to upgrade it to Win2k and failed. Only after fixing his Win98 problem did the upgrade work.
Had he tried a clean install, he would have better luck I bet.
His Error 40 ;-)
