The COT report takes us through Tuesday the 16th. Here is what Leonard Kaplan says about the last few days:

"Gold responded well today and closed up $1 even though it took aggressive selling by the funds. Talk in the trade has the funds adding another 500,000 to their short positions in just the last few days while the trade gratefully accepts their offers. Physical demand is reported to be quite brisk from the Far East. "

And his view about the gold scene in general,

"This market has been leaned on in a very big way with the huge short position recently placed by the funds. I remain convinced that they will be severely punished for their sins."

""Incredible week under the surface for POG. The COT is out and the specs are now net short 57,160 contracts, up from 38,226 the previous week""

You got it backwards, those are long positions , not short.
Short positions show as -(negative) numbers on the COT report.
