I am trying to imagine what harm it does to have school children given balloons that say "Ask About Lesbian Lives". Are you under the impression that a balloon will turn them into lesbians? I suppose they might go home and ask their parents about lesbians, is that a bad thing? My son heard boys calling each other gay on the playground when he was in 1st grade and wanted to know what that meant. Do you think knowing about something causes harm? I have never seen information cause harm- but I have certainly seen ignorance do that.

I see X has already responded to you on the Lesbian Avenger piece. Yes, balloons are terribly frightening weapons of recruitment, as are telephone numbers. Millions of heterosexual twelve year old girls are going to rush to a phone , call the Lesbian Avengers, and be "turned gay". Not bloody likely.

What may happen is that a few twelve year olds who believe they are gay will call the Lesbian Avengers, meet a few of them and have an honest discussion about what it means to be gay. One or two of these may (God forbid!) actually experiment with gay sex. You know what? I can think of much more horrifying fates, like being close-minded and judgemental.
