While I applaud the decline in the rate of growth of the public debt, it is growing. It should also be noted that the
US debt does not include some significant off-book liabilities (i.e. social security).

1969 19.1%
1998 20.1%

US Public Debt as a percentage of GDP:

1969 37.4%
1998 62.9%

Upon this analysis, I would be content if "we" would just stop spending more than we collect.
