My work is done for private sector real estate developers building office buildings, shopping centers, etc. While a small minority of their tenants feed off the Federal Government (like so many companies controlled by Republicans and Democrats alike, all of which know corporate welfare when they deposit it in the bank), most of them the tenants these days are technology companies, telecommunications companies and the like. Few, if any, of them "depend" on tax dollars coming to Washington DC or having anything do with the Federal government as a major source of income. Indeed, if you knew your federal budget, you'd know that maybe 5% of it (tops) represents discretionary social spending - the other 95% is spent on Social Security and Medicare, interest on the Federal debt (80% interest on the Reagan Bush portion of the debt), military and quasi-military spending, State department activities and foreign aid, federal employment and retirement obligations, etc. And your assumption that all Washington lawyers are somehow working in conjunction with the government is dead wrong. Oddly, the largest contributors to Bush's inauguration were Washington law firms lining up to suck on the t*t of Dubya's new regime (sort of like Dubya's answer to the trial lawyers). If you've seen The Distinguished Gentlemen, you know exactly who I am talking about. Guys like Dick Cheney, who with great aplomb (and hypocrisy) said in the VP debate that federal government has never done anything for his company, seemingly forgetting the tens of millions in international trade supports and other federal largesse which he was all too happy to accept. Most of my clients are very conservative, by the way, and they know exactly what my politics are. Most (not all) of them are a lot more honest about this election than the people here are -- they readily acknowledge that Bush in all likelihood lost at the polls, but they don't care, they are just happy he is in the White House and they all hate Gore. It would be nice to see that kind of honesty here - instead it'ss a steady diet of mind altering drugs here that has you believing that Bush won this thing fair and square. As for Federalism and the USSC's decision in Bush v. Gore, I've covered the issue too many times, including here, to repeat it again. You don't want to listen, I certainly don't want to repeat myself. And as for the 125 year old, all I will say is that Bush v. Gore as a decision is right up there with Dred Scott, about the same vintage. Good luck over the next four years. This illegitimate administration is going to need all the luck it can get.
