Stephan, Re: farming

There is a group of farmers that are farming land that has been passed down through the generations and are making a profit. I belong to a family that is farming the land that my grandfather and father and my generation accumulated. One of the great grandchild is farming the land and he is making a good living and we are all receiving nice income form the land. Most of the land in the Red River Valley in North Dakota has these type of operators.

The reason this can occur has been because of accumulation of additional assets by each generation and the family making sure the person farming the land makes a living. i.e. not grouching the farmer for income. The parties are all interested in keeping the assets for the future generations.

Also, these people did not squander their money and left accumulated cash gained from the land assets to be passed down to their children.

One more cultural process is that the grains from the farming has been held in storage until prices are high. During the past years we have not sold any grain, but it looks like prices are starting to trend higher and some cash will be accumulated.

As you have noted it will cost more to plant crops this year, but we will and will store the crop until profits can be made.
