Perhaps the value they place on that 15% would go up dramatically if SK changed to cdma2000. totaltele.com 22 January 2001 NTT DoCoMo's plans to acquire a stake in South Korea's SK Telecom have stumbled over the price the Japanese mobile operator will pay, according to sources quoted by The Wall Street Journal. DoCoMo is reportedly poised to pay around US$5 billion for the 15% stake. The companies have been in on-off negotiations for a year. DoCoMo is pursuing a strategy of taking minority stakes in foreign mobile operators; so far in Asia it has only secured a 19% share of Hong Kong's Hutchison Telecom, but has reportedly been in talks with Taiwan's KG Telecom and C&W Optus. Earlier this month, SK's major shareholder, Korean conglomerate SK Group, agreed to sell 14.5% of the telecoms company to an investment firm, which will only pay for the stake if a buyer is found. The price was set at 3.8 trillion won ($3 billion). The talks fell apart in October last year because the Korean government had not decided which 3G standard to adopt. It eventually opted to set aside two licenses for W-CDMA, the technology dominant in Europe and favored by DoCoMo. One license was reserved for the rival cdma2000 standard lobbied for by local equipment vendors. A further obstacle was removed when SK successfully secured a W-CDMA license in December... > Mqurice PS: Hi Khan! What century is it in Chinese years? Or don't you have centuries, just years of cats, snakes, rats and stuff? Japan has time measured by Emperor years.
