BRCM -- Futures Firm, Broadcom Up
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock futures were up in pre-opening trading on Wednesday after chip maker Broadcom Corp. (NasdaqNM:BRCM - news) posted fourth-quarter profits that beat Wall Street forecasts.

March futures for the technology-laden Nasdaq 100 index were up 35 points at 2,780.50. Futures for the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index were up 2.50 point to 1,368.40.

Broadcom, a maker of high-speed communications semiconductors, was up at $142 on the Instinet electronic broker system from a Tuesday close of $133-7/16. After Tuesday's close the company reported fourth-quarter earnings that beat expectations and forecast stronger revenue growth for its current quarter.

Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news), the No. 1 personal computer maker, was up at $23-1/4 from a close of $20.05. The company said after the close on Tuesday that its quarterly operating profit rose, beating lowered expectations.

Compaq stood by its profit outlook for the year ahead. However, it trimmed its sales guidance for 2001 because of uncertain market conditions that executives blamed for causing a slowdown in PC sales.
