Well then.. his first target will be Canada.. his largest trading partner, and a country that has had legalized abortion in one form or another for awhile. Of course.. Bush probably thinks Japan is his leading trade partner.. so perhaps we're in the clear ;)

Ted,

That's odd because someone on the news said a few days ago that Bush doesn't want to give favored trading status to nations that support abortion, and then yesterday, I read in the paper that he no longer wants the US to give aid to international organizations that support abortion.

I don't know about the source of the comment about linking most favored trading status in any way with country's stance on abortion. Just about every country has a most favored trading status, and even China gained it recently.

Powell must mean giving up all sanctions except those related to abortions.

Again, I don't know where you get this stuff. I would be very surprised if there was anything to it. Do you have a link by any chance? Ther btw is a difference between trading between countries, and a subsidy from US treasury to other countries and organizations.

It seems that Powell wants to scrap most of the sanctions related to trade and other commerce that are placed on other countries.

Again, I have to say that I am very pleasantly surprised that this is one of the goals of the administration. I am very skeptical about sanctions, and actually, Republicans in Congress were the originators of many of the sanctions that are on the books, so IMO, this will definitely be a breath of fresh air.

Joe

I think you will find that Powell's politics and the politics of the influential members of the Republican party do not overlap all that much. I suspect that Powell may not last a long time as a result...

I don't see him wearing a muzzle or talking the "approved" viewpoints.

That statement is not true. The closest to it that could be true is that he doesn't want to give favored trading status to nations that perform forced abortions, but I doubt that is true either because I do not think Bush favors removing most favored nation trading status from China.

Not giving aid to some country or organization is not the same as imposing sanctions against that country or organization.
