Joe,

Powell must mean giving up all sanctions except those related to abortions.

Again, I don't know where you get this stuff. I would be very surprised if there was anything to it. Do you have a link by any chance? Ther btw is a difference between trading between countries, and a subsidy from US treasury to other countries and organizations.

The comment re abortions and trade was from the news for CNBC during trading hours. The comments re cutting off international organizations that favor abortion were in the Seattle Times.

Both are mainstream media and both of fairly good quality.

It seems that Powell wants to scrap most of the sanctions related to trade and other commerce that are placed on other countries.

Again, I have to say that I am very pleasantly surprised that this is one of the goals of the administration. I am very skeptical about sanctions, and actually, Republicans in Congress were the originators of many of the sanctions that are on the books, so IMO, this will definitely be a breath of fresh air.

On first blush I would have tended to agree but then looking at it more closely, I realized that trade sanctions were imposed in many instances for when a country was behaving immorally in its treatment of its citizenry like the Mai Lai (sp?) massacre in China, or in its treatment of neighboring countries.

So it seems that this lifting of sanctions is all about making $$$ and screw morals.....except, of course, when it comes to abortions. And notice that its never women who are proposing these abortion directives....I wonder why?
