I am all for conservation. But it is a question of supply, demand and price. If the price of energy was say 1/10th of what it is now, we would be consuming a lot more energy. So based on this hypothetical situation, we are already saving a lot. If the price goes up, there will be a lot more conservation.

If you are being honest, then how can you support the Republican party...they have been the ones in Congress to squelch any attempt to raise gasoline taxes. And you are right, higher gas prices have been very effective in keeping consumption in Europe down, as an example.

For example, if there was no artificial ceiling for price of electricity, there would not be any shortage in California. As the price naturally goes up, consumers would save more, and ther would be no blackouts.

It may come as a shock to you...well at least it was shock to me. I was doing business on the phone with a couple of Southern Californians last Friday. Neither were aware of the energy problem in the state. When pushed, they vaguely remember some talk on the news. Why do you think the legislature deregulated wholesale energy prices without deregulating the prices paid by the consumer? CA is one big Fantasyland where there are no shortages of anything.

Previously when we talked about the environment and the diminishment of our natural resourses, you suggested that the supply was ample and confident that long before we ran out, we will have come up with alternates.

There already are alternatives that won't run out for 100s of years - coal and nuclear energy. The oil is just so cheap and so flexible that the alternatives have a tough time competing.

Right......and coal causes much more serious air pollution problems and nuclear energy is extremely dangerous if it goes even a little bit awry. After all, Chernoybal suffered only meltdowns and avoided any serious explosions. Who knows when these problems can be successfully mitigated. It could be in ten years or a thousand.

As far as necessity of drilling in the arctic, the oil is there, the need is here, it's just a question of connecting the dots. Whether they get connected today, 10 or 20 years from now, I don't really care. Since the oil is still relatively cheap, I would do it later rather than now.

Yep, you are right....just connect the dots.

There is a relationship between this world and us and the other living organisms that inhabit it. Increasingly, that relationship is being skewed in our direction. When the relationship becomes too imbalanced, there will be a price to be paid.

Of course there is a price to be paid for 6+ billion people living on this Earth. Everyone who decides to sacrifice his own life to lessen the pressure on this Earth has my deepest appreciation and gratitude.

Be my guest.....I have a suspicion consumption levels may drop precipitously.

with this beauty:

You know Jozef.. your callousness shocks me.. when you said this, the first thing that came to mind was the scene out of Charles Dickens book Ebenezer Scrooge when the 2 charity workers ask for some donations to help a special fund for the poor.. Scrooge replies why cant they go to the prisons or workhouses, when replied that many would rather die then do this, Scrooge replies that if they are going to die, better to do it quickly and help decrease the surplus population...

Wouldnt surprise me at all to find out you get visited by a few Ghosts of Christmas next year.. you need to get redeemed quickly.
