Probably the same reason blacks don't harken back to the days of slavery even though it is in our Constitution that blacks and Indians only count 3/5 of a person. The really great thing about tradition is that it is rooted in the past and therefore, if it is irrelevant or wrong, it can be removed. This is not a Constitutional requirement. It is unlikely that anything that is as personal as religion or even prayer is going to be all inclusive. None of the Invocations provided by another poster could be construed as non-denominational. There are (as a result of immigration in the last 40-50 years) SIGNIFICANTLY more people of different religions including but not limited to Buddhism, Hindu, Moslem, Wiccan, New Age and a host of others whose adherents take their religion as seriously as the Christian majority takes theirs. We are not dogs. Just because we used to circle 3 times before we sit down, doesn't mean we have to continue to do so until our nation dies. For every person that the invocation brings comfort, there is likely someone, somewhere who is offended. In such cases, the burden of proof is on the person claiming their right to do something and deference should be given to those who prefer nothing, especially because this is a country based upon freedom of religion, as you pointed out. What is freedom of religion if freedom FROM religion isn't recognized and practiced in secular acts of the state? JMO.

Hi Jane, No responses from the LW here. And I came ready to debate. I didn't realize these political threads gets so heated. I thought ASK GOD was bad! I'm thinking that my profound and voluminous research has them scratching their heads realizing GW behaved in tradition with their own presidents Upon realization that GW did nothing "zealous" or religiously fanatical, they will find the next "fault" to dwell upon. We did watch the Republicans do this to Clinton for the last 8 years. Then again - he gave us plenty to react to. The irony is that GW gets blasted by them for trying to be pious, while the RW demonized Clinton for actually doing bad things(Explaining away the cigar in a women's genitals to my children was not presidential role-model material by anyone's standard). I found this in Jefferson's 1801 inauguration speech. Jefferson - 1801 enlightened by a benign religion, professed, indeed, and practiced in various forms, yet all of them inculcating honesty, truth, temperance, gratitude, and the love of man; acknowledging and adoring an overruling Providence, which by all its dispensations proves that it delights in the happiness of man here and his greater happiness hereafter -- with all these blessings, what more is necessary to make us a happy and a prosperous people? Still one thing more, fellow-citizens -- a wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities. I think it is cool how it actually integrates the fabric of these political discussions with the reality of economic growth and free markets. Who says religion and politics don't mix. If the LW could only think of GW as benign, we could all work together towards a single goal of happiness and prosperity. That is all.
