Getch,

<< the W-CDMA 5200 Chipset ... as QCOM gains access to the 80% (GSM) of the world >>

That will be accessed by a chip other than the MSM5200 which is applicable to Asian countries with no existing GSM (Japan & possibly Korea), not to Europe or anywhere else where GSM is currently deployed. Those countries will require a multi-mode GSM/W-CDMA or preferably GSM/GPRS/W-CDMA chip.

Note I say "possibly" Korea, because Korea is going to want multi-mode IS95 -A/B/C and W-CDMA.

A (undefined) multimode chip is shown way to the right on the latest Qualcomm roadmap.

W-CDMA 5200 Chipset. Sampling June Quarter. Not going to be commercially available anytime soon, but from past chipset series timetables we can start to get a better idea of timing of what will very likely be a large tornado as QCOM gains access to the 80% (GSM) of the world market of which it is currently shut out. I don't know if Rory was referring to a different possible tornado in his thoughts.

In Dr. Jacobs words, "1x handsets will outnumber wcdma handsets for years to come".

I was referring to the cdma data tornado in general, without regard to flavor, but certainly the tornado will arrive as 1x technology upgrades to existing cdma networks in Korea, Japan, and U.S. initially. This will pressure the gsm cabal to begin upgrades I think and then we'll begin to feel the wcdma effects on the tornado.
