I have no idea why you think liberal has to mean personally liberal. I am extremely personally conservative in some areas- everyone has a right to be whatever they want to be in their personal life. However, I would never inflict my extreme conservatism in personal life on anyone else- that, to me, is a major and important difference between my conservatism and the conservative movement as it takes shape under the umbrella of the Republican party..

I think many people seem to be under the impression that liberal has to mean libertine, or careless, or akin to a hippie. Not so, in my experience. Many people labor under a mistaken belief about relativism also. Some people erroneously believe that relativists cannot be moral people. Not so. It merely means you recognize that the grounding for your morals is not absolute- imo this means you choose your morals with much more thought and care than just swilling some prefabricated morality whole- but that is mere personal opinion.

If I drive through a poor, rundown neighborhood, I see to it that my purse is out of sight and I lock my car doors. Most of these neighborhoods are black. I don't apologize.

If I am driving through an upscale neighborhood, I don't feel wary, whatever the color of the gathered local denizens.
