control panel,multimedia, audio, playback seems to be a possible approach. Which device are you wanting to adjust volume on right now?

Speaker Icon disappears from Windows 95/98 Taskbar

Models Affected: All models running Windows 95/98

Symptom: Speaker symbol is missing from the taskbar

Resolution:

To Return the Speaker Symbol:

Click on the START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL. When the Control Panel window appears Double-Click on the MULTIMEDIA icon.

When the Multimedia window appears click on the AUDIO tab if it is not already showing in front.

Place a check mark in the box Show volume control on the taskbar by clicking in the box.

Click on APPLY at the bottom of the window and then click OK.
