(NasdaqNM:EXPE - news) on Monday posted a quarterly loss that was much smaller than Wall Street forecasts as the online travel service boosted sales by 81 percent. The company, which is majority owned by software giant Microsoft Corp. (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news), said it lost $2.6 million or 6 cents per share, excluding certain unusual charges, compared with a loss of $10.3 million or 26 cents per share a year earlier. Expedia was expected to lose 15 cents a share, according to First Call/Thomson Financial, which tracks the forecasts of Wall Street analysts. Sales for Expedia's second quarter ended Dec. 31, rose to $80 million from $44 million in the year-ago quarter.
