You might find something at this link. I do not use Etrends.
Are you using Windows 98 se or Windows Me or another one?

support.microsoft.com

Note there is a patch but they recommend trouble shooting first. Course, you really have already done a lot of trouble shooting to have isolated it to the E trends software so there may not be much more before trying the patch.

Later today, others with more knowledge will be able to explain if restarting the machine or turning it off before the windows shut down screen appears is damaging the computer. My previous experience with these issues is that periodically, a file ends up getting corrupted.

hi patricia

in addition to the microsoft troubleshooting article that was posted to you (which assumes, as do i, that you are running win98), you may wish to try these two items:

********************************

Here's a work-around....

Create a new shortcut on the desktop, Name it "ExitWindows". Right click the icon, click on properties, and in the box named "Target" type the following line.

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

In the box "Start In", type C:\WINDOWS, then save it.

To exit, just double click the icon."

Also ....

Are you on a cable modem, network hub, or have a secondary Operating system? More likely your kernell32 file is corrupt. when was the last time you ran scanreg.exe if not sure, type scanreg in the RUN window of the 'start'.

*********************************

let us know if any of these suggestions have helped. or if you are NOT running win98.

good luck

:)

Patrica

Below is a link to a patch that was recommended on this thread some time back and it worked very well for me when I was using Windows 98 SE.

Patricia

The fix that Ed posted..http://users.megapathdsl.net/~revolution/vxdfix.html

worked well for him but it is my guess that it caused havoc with my 98SE. I was having a couple of the symptoms that that fix referred to so I gave it a try. Either something else went wrong at the same time or my system kinda threw up on the fix. Not trying to talk you out of using it, just telling you of my experience. Fortunately the patient didn't die.

tc :-)

patricia,

well, by now you have discovered that you have a few responses to your shutdown prob. i sincerely hope that we are helping you here. but just in case what we have provided so far does not cure your pc's shutdown ills, take a look at this granddaddy of all shutdown sites that i just found tonight in a fred langa newsletter!

aumha.org

fred langa notes that the site needs updating on one link....

"A few of the links on the site need updating, however. For example,
the links to Microsoft's useful Win98 Power Management Troubleshooter
(Pmtshoot.exe) are bad. The correct link is
support.microsoft.com "

please get back to us and let us know what worked for you so we can put an asterisk next to that method for next time. <g3>

good luck

:)
