Arch, IMO as we see the value and distance of electricity increase, copper will become the preferred metal for both distribution and transformation. It has lower resistivity and better high temperature characteristics than aluminum. However, you make a good point.

That's not true. Aluminum is sometimes used for wide spans because it's lighter. All the wires on poles around my neighbourhood are copper. I thought most long distance transmission wires are also copper where weight is not a concern. Copper is used in the windings of motors and generators. All the new wind farms being established will use lots of copper.
