Aluminium has greater strength per weight so it is used for high voltage lines with long spans ... about 25, 30 years ago i remember an article, in Scientific American maybe, on various metals combined for this purpose, some by layering and/or winding, some by alloys ... it's a complex subject and as of that time its study was in flux ... it would be good to hear from someone up on current use, eh.
