"Wonder what happened behind the scenes to piss ATT off so badly a few years ago." From my perspective, if one follows the genealogical tree of ATT, one comes to the door of many GSM gang members...notice with whom ATT is partnering at this time...birds of a feather, IMO. Only by disruption will that anti-competitive cartel be dispersed; perhaps this is part of the problem. Maybe what got T upset was they could not simply take the candy and walk away. Regardless, it seems to me QCOM knows their limitations, yet is not allowing their shareholders nor themselves to be negotiated into oblivion.

wine futures will plummet because of the over capacity in S California and the fed will have to lower by a full basis point LOL, someone should send AG a note today.

I've decided that GPRS is a moot point for Q investors except for the fact that it might delay ATT's adoption of WCDMA.

Unless an EU carrier cancels their plans for GPRS and defects to 1X or an new entity decides to setup shop with a new 1X network and go head to head with GSM/GPRS then the Eu public will never know what they're missing and thus no impetus for an EU carrier to change their plans. The poor EU cell user has no choice, it's vanilla, vanilla or vanilla.
Now if there was competition I doubt that these GPRS blunders would be tolerated much at all.

I'm sure it's been discussed but I just can't remember the reason why they just don't go directly to UMTS, why are they bothering with GPRS at all.

Regarding your comments about AWE and - "Wonder what happened behind the scenes to piss ATT off so badly a few years ago".

One answer lies with Michael Armstrong. He was formerly with Hughes. QCOM (specifically its founders) have a history of kicking Hughes' butt in many different businesses. Linkabit days with Video Cypher and VSAT (hughes network systems is the old Linkabit Telecom division), OmniTRACS, plus others.

Michael Armstrong's ego and NOK's pride have cost both companies their competitive edge. So when Michael Armstrong was asked by Fortune Magazine a year or two ago if they would ever use QCOM, he said never. The fact that he answered the question tells you he has a bug up his ass.

He should be gone soon and new management will have an opportunity to rationalize cdma. Its still a matter of when not if AWE will use cdma. FWIW.
