There are gov't grants through NIH that help jump start researchers all over the country. IT is in the benefit of all citizens to help fund this work. Basic research is suited best for gov't funding. The later part that involves bringing the promising products to the marketplace is where private industry and venture capitalists come into the picture. The expense is staggering and it takes many years and hundreds of millions of dollars for a product to get to the FDA approval stage.
