Personally, I would say that "invisible friend" is inappropriate. I prefer "imaginary friend".


That was my fault. She did originally say imaginary and I made a note of it but when I used the expression this morning my memory was slightly out of gear. It should be imaginary, for sure.

Either works for me- they have about the same meaning since I am not in the habit of seeing things that aren't there. But I understand other people are- so imaginary friend covers that circumstance.
