I think you're correct if you're talking about an intra-office LAN, but is Cat 5 capable of 100 Mbps from an external source into a LAN? Current DSL, cable and T-1 links run much less than that, around 1.5 Mbps or so. Looks like I need to find that article and remind myself of exactly what it said!

Yes, there's some distance limit for Cat 5 / 100 Mbps. (Sorry, I don't have much idea what that limit would be.)
