thanks Ben,

China Mobile signed a large gprs contract with Ericsson and some smaller one with Nokia. They are promoting gprs rollout as a way to extend the life of their GSM network.
All these are done after they rejected 1x overlay. Similar thing happened at Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom and all claimed that switching network core would cost too much.

There are quite some activities. Eastcom started a gprs center jointly with Motorola recently.

As gprs's abysmal performance continues, I wish Qualcomm would give it a second run at China Mobile and make them have a second thought. A small scale trial system would be very helpful.

Looks like 1x will blanket most part of pacific rim. The China's eagerness of gaining the best technology will bode well for Qualcomm. As far as I know, cdma is probably the only technology which is BARRICATED in China before the Unicom deal.

Politically, China is so much similar to AWE in a stricking way. The CTO, MII minister Wu chosed GSM instead of cdma. Premier Zhu has pinned the blame of foreign dominance in mobile industry on minister Wu. However, Wu is winning and voted #1 influencial telecom person of the year of 2000. His credit is for overseeing the astonishing near 40% growth in telecom for several years in a roll. He also overtook tabacco as #1 tax contributer since three years ago.
